Did you get Epic Version or Steam’s?

Steam, unfortunately.

I don’t think I’ll be able to do anything with this game. The engine doesn’t like having its swapchain modified. SK’s framerate limiter can fix minor stuttering, but the game really needs additional backbuffers.

I don’t know if it matters, but is exclusive fullscreen mode properly kicking in for you? Based on DF’s video, you may have to switch to borderless then fullscreen mode for it to work properly, or something weird like that.

The performance is significantly lower in borderless mode.

That’s a shame. Hopefully they get some stuff fixed. I am curious on how my PC setup will play this game with HDR monitor at 1440p. lol.

i7 4790K 4.3 Core Boost 4.6Ghz Turbo.
RX 5700 XT
860 EVO 1TB SSD
32GB DDR3 1866Mhz

The way Flip Discard mode works with higher backbuffers is thru Borderless or windowed mode.

Edit:
Good to know that I should use Exclusive Fullscreen mode for now though.

Based on benchmarks i’ve seen, the performance is a lot worse than what you get with Death Stranding, regardless of a DLSS 2.0 implementation. The 1060 and Rx 580 struggle to keep up with a base PS4 :man_shrugging:

Considering the performance, it feels more like you’re just emulating the game.

And for clarity, Death Stranding runs at 1080p30 on the base PS4, just like Horizon does. The 1060 and 580 are well ahead of PS4’s performance in Death Stranding.

Yeah. I know that b/c I can actually run DeathStranding at 1440p and get framerates higher than 90 FPS. But I usually lock it down due to instability with CPU and such. Maxed settings I will add with HDR. But Death Stranding Port did proper fix on fps higher than 30 with animations. It actually looks better at higher fps.

Edit:
Though take it into account I think Death Stranding is not really close as near as massive as Horizon Zero Dawn right? It’s really not that highly compareable. Though I feel like Kojima’s Dev’s knew how to work with Decima Engine unlike the ones who made Horizon.

Nah, it’s clearly Denuvo. They forgot to add it to this game, so performance is suffering without it.

Also I am quite sure that DX12 doesn’t have true Exclusive Fullscreen. Its still basically Borderless windowed mode.

It just increases the number of backbuffers. From 2 to 3.

The game should ideally have at minimum 3 backbuffers, preferably 4 or more. I cannot override the backbuffers like I can in most games, because the engine thinks it’s crashing if I do.

I ended up using RTSS to cap the game at 60 FPS instead, and at 1440p at High and HDR enabled so that the 60 FPS is pretty much rock solid. God… I’ve longed for this.

SK works too. Just set d3d11=false and d3d12=true.

Okay good to know. I will try that. Hopefully my setup should work decently like that. I didn’t own PS4 at all so this is all new to me but based on original settings game looks damn good. Really good.

It’s worth forcing 16x AF on the driver level. It might not apply properly through the game settings.

Mhm, I played around with SK initially, as well as tried overriding the backbuffer count (same crash as you got), but ended up using RTSS for it since I have to use it for its OSD anyway.

Although the lack of proper HDR support for RTSS is annoying.

In-game setting isn’t working at all, no. I’ve also seen reports though that forcing it might cause flickering – no idea what that’s about.

So you can force it thru AMD drivers then? That’s really good news actually. Will do then. Will I have to restart PC AMD Console to make it stick?

Forcing it in the driver, you mean?

Yeah, that’s not really a good thing to do in modern games

Textures are used for more than just models these days, there are lookup tables and shadow maps and light probes, and forcing anisotropic filtering will cause parts of the texture that aren’t supposed to be visible to affect shader calculations.

4x AF is the highest you can force anisotropy without virtually guaranteeing you’re going to break something.

… I’m gonna have to disable browser notifications if Focus Assist in Windows don’t stop working. For some reason despite having both the game and Windows running in HDR, every time a browser notification appears the monitor flashes to black for a second or two, and then back when the notification disappears.

That’s news to me. That’s actually kind of interesting.

Based on the DF video, it does look better with 16x forced, i think they tested 16x on the 2080 ti. Don’t know if results would be the same with AMD cards.

I’m personally someone who needs to always max out AF - especially at 4k.

What HDR settings you using Akty? my game looks a bit greyish for some odd reason.
