Topic-Free Mega Thread - v 1.11.2020

Meh, Reddit being its usual self – upvotes and downvotes are an hourly popularity contest where the contents of the comment itself seldom matter – what matter is the time of day it currently is and how much percentages of the userbase is currently on either “side” of the conflict (of upvotes and downvotes).

It’s why you can have different “threads” on the same topic at the same subreddit at two different days, or times of day, with one being massively upvoted and the other being massively downvotes.

Any objections if I move the auto-update feature into SKIF and make it necessary to run SKIF to update Special K? It’ll be easier that way, and I can build more features into the update dialogs (i.e. a place to show patch notes before accepting the update).

It’ll kinda break my old mods if I modernize them, but they’re old and they can continue using the original auto-update

If it meant a transition from that weird update behavior that saw the Special K DLL files participate in the update procedure, then by all means, go for it.

Just having SKIF handle the updates from start to end, without involving weirdly run Special K DLL files, would almost certainly minimize the number of weird issues we saw in relation to install/update procedure.

Believe it or not, that design you think is weird was intentional

SKIM was statically linked, meaning it didn’t need any system DLLs to run. SKIM would start the install process by downloading a (relatively recent) copy of Special K and then invoke that DLL’s auto-update to go and fetch the latest version.

I built it so it has two opportunities (the first DLL downloaded, followed by the DLL to install) to fail if AV software or missing dependencies are mucking things up. It was designed to fail-fast so that a user couldn’t install a mod that would prevent the game from running. One of those other 2 DLLs would fail first

Go ahead, and add the Patreon link to SKIF while you’re at it.

If i had to guess, i think they just lie to themselves (and probably don’t notice). They lie in that they believe they know you in some bad light, maybe it’s jealousy that fuels them? Or they just like drama… i mean reddit is a circle jerk :man_shrugging:

Also iirc, i was banned from posting in this subreddit :stuck_out_tongue:

Hot or Not?

I haven’t forgotten the premium patrons, whose names will be added to SKIF and the in-game About screen. Just working on arranging the UI to make that feel natural, rather than tacked on.

BTW, can I get everyone to subscribe to (click the bell until it turns blue and then … !) this sub-category?

Until auto-update is functional, new releases will be announced there. Even after auto-update is restored, that’s still going to be where I announce new releases

Reddit, Twitter, etc

Same shit different day. They only exist to amplify a narrow world view when it comes to any topic. Context, facts, evidence – all need not apply.

Oh yeahh, Twitter… I don’t know why celebrities bother to use Twitter. It only seems like they give others the opportunity to harass them online. But they still use it

But i haven’t used Twitter enough to understand truly what’s going on there, or why they like it.

Yeah, that looks good.

Oh, and if you leave some parts of the Steam Game Management stuff in SKIF you could expand it to also include e.g. GOG games and Epic Games Launcher games, and then just rename the tab to “Game Management”.

Wonder if he knows we can see him typing?

Twitter especially is the choice for the politically fueled individuals… and Reddit devolves into a circlejerk the more people a sub gets. Both platforms favor contextless interactions where sensible interactions go to die. Just look at the link Kaldaien linked above :upside_down_face:

Sounds about right

Sensible interactions are a rarity in general :frowning: Even irl. Though yeah, these platforms take it to the next step. I have said on one of the threads before, these overly popular platforms thrive on hostility. They’re not the unfriendly sites that managed to get lucky and win as popular platforms. They’re massive in part because they add stakes to online people’s lives :man_shrugging: I mean, Youtubers still fight over the best console even now. I’m for friendly discussions, those can exist between people with differing opinions. Unfortunately, most contrive their dignity with heated arguments they’re not allowed to lose - i don’t know if i worded that last sentence the right way, lol.

Another way to picture it is, would an overly friendly super nice platform ever be that popular? It matters to have a sense of “stakes”, so that delusional “achievement” seems conceivable. It’s human nature, basically.

That entirely depends on the types of people engaging on it.

Dear God (What you are to game enhanement)
I was also Banned for pointing out to a moderator who banned me for “Censor Evasion” that there was no censor evasion or explitives, I showed them the above User, I suggested they where possibly mixing it up I was told to “Watch my tone” when I said “For what?”

They quoted another use in that thread and banned me for “Spam” and as you said being banned, by critising those with extreme Identity poltics Complexes, Said individuual you shown above did not even clarify they where grand abd yet “Targeting a trans” as if that changed anything, Both hateful, but one ticks the idenity poltics Box? I dont even know, and as you say its the same shit “we dEtErmIneD it was VAlID” when appealed, I pointed out if someone quoting another user and banning me with theft same moderator mocking my English, Is not “Against their terms” their is obvisouly something wrong, I will donate happily. But please consider subscribe star.

Not patreon. Look at patreons history of suspending accounts of those with differing opinions, or even canvases they dont like, Or banning adult content from individuals if they are Japanese, They lost the settlement, but have not indiicatef a change in behavior, I think subscribe star takes less as well. Defo a better site, patrein are steam incarnate. I understand this might further bring a reduction in numbers,

I never created an account here, but you and others who contributed in any way have created a great piece of software. I wish I could help, but my line of work is soley in cybersecurity. 'Even your site is incredible. Very well made… more so than microsofts fourms… But thats big tech in a nutshell
Sorry for my poor English, Its secondary, to my Native langauge of japanese

Yeah, I’m much happier off of Steam  Moderation over there does not bother to look at the details of reported posts before issuing bans. By the time you get to 40k posts like I have, it drives you insane. I have tried numerous times to explain the actual problem was a post 3 replies earlier that they didn’t bother to look at, but that never works.

As for subscribe star, I do not think an additional service would help and would only complicate things. I am setup for direct PayPal donation though.

Dodging Moderator Bans be like:

tenor

Looks like Durante has a port article for Horizon Zero Dawn via IGN that should be up whenever the NDA for that is up probably along with the game unlocking on Friday I’d imagine.

Though it looks like a few reviews are already going up.

EDIT: 1920P huh.

Tall-screen gaming lives on. :stuck_out_tongue:

(Vertical expansion of the display resolution or Ver+ instead of cropping or the usual horizontal plus or minus. It had it’s support in a few games or engines, notably Unreal)
