Yes only one game now, I have shadow of the tomb raider and destiny 2 on steam but uninstalled. My other games are on uplay, rockstar games launcher, epic store and ps4 pro (and a bit cracked games when i want to try before buying…yes it’s bad) i only love games like horizon (already finished several times on ps4 pro), assassin’s creed series, red dead redemption 2, witcher 3 and tomb raider. If i can buy directly from the devs platform, i’m doing it.
but for my special K problem, i tried what you told me but i still have the issue.
The game crashes when its trying to start in excl. fullscreen mode (windowed or borderless starts just fine) or when trying to manual save at a campfire. It doesnt happen without SK. Do nvidia cp enhancements work? like forcing gsync, vsync etc. I only have MSI afterburner open in the background to check temps
There’s a few widgets you can use from the SpecialK interface I’m thinking the one for memory would show it’s a leak over time although not what is causing it but the game either is just hitting a crash or it runs out of memory and hits a crash.
The game can on some systems draw over 20 GB of system memory eventually running out and starts to utilize the page file instead but I haven’t found a cause although I believe the newer AMD and NVIDIA drivers do help for the D3D12 implementation but then there’s third party programs, overlays like the Steam one for that version of the game and for the non-genuine version the bypass might have done something.
Just as a few examples, I’m leaning on it being system specific and some third party software doing poor D3D12 API hooking and leaking over time as other examples has the game sitting around 4 - 6 GB of memory usage without any significant increases even over time so it’s not a constant behavior on every system.
EDIT: Third party programs and hooks being a lengthy list of stuff like mouse and keyboard software, audio software, overlay and monitoring software, OS itself, Steam or other clients with more overlays and also programs like ReShade or SpecialK plus the display driver and more.
(Recording programs and then also anti-virus software if that’s a possible problem as well including Windows Defender too and it’s many options and extras.)
SpecialK’s Modules.log file should have a good overview of what’s hooking into the process at least to give the user some overview of what is happening, crash.log or d3d log files might just have generic error messages and less informative content but might occasionally get some better details on why it crashed.
I disabled the game’s crash handler and replaced it with my own. The game crashes constantly, so this is nothing new. My crash handler’s just a little more, uh, noticeable and only happens once instead of 5 or 6 popups every time the game crashes
Crash logs that Special K captures are in logs/crash/<timestamp>/…
oooooh i see, so you made the crash funnier and cooler, thats actually cool LOL. I mean, it sucks when the games crashes when im about to kill a thunderjaw…but its way more funny hearing the MGS alert than seeing an error message…tiny details that i like. You are a cool dude.
The game only started crashing on me when I started using SK, and now it crashes even when SK is not injected.
Granted, I started using SK at the same time I reached the first city, so THAT might be the issue, but borderless crashes much more often than fullscreen, with or without SK.
At this point I am inclined to just wait for the patch…
Which might just have happened? Seems the public depot on Steam got updated around 7 minutes back so in about 3 minutes it’ll be in the pending downloads.
That’s a driver problem. I have to reboot my entire computer to get the NVIDIA driver to stop crashing after the initial load screen. The game’s going to be a mess for years :-\
Tried disabling the hardware accelerated GPU scheduling setting in case that is acting up though that should be a software crash not something like that.
I’d downclock the GPU a bit too just to check on that, not the most faith in these factory overclocked models especially when it pushes the card to near it’s limit and then later drivers or additions push the GPU a bit extra resulting in instability.
Although that’s something to test in a more stable environment and in less problematic titles not something that clearly has issues of whatever is going on in this game though it could be a good stress test but would be difficult to tell what’s a software issue and where it’s a driver issue or the hardware including overclocking stability.
Funny in a way, even if they’re not throttled benchmark software and patterns can be completely stable and then games like the newest Tomb Raider or Witcher 3 or the Battlefield games can hit instability within minutes particularly newer games now on Vulkan or D3D12 though it can differ a bit between AMD and NVIDIA like how recent AMD GPU’s are more prone to stress the RAM so the GPU itself could be stable and the XMP profile when relaxed or set back to default is what stabilizes things instead.
NVIDIA also has a number of conditions for how this boost algorithm operates and a pretty strict threshold for what can be done by default like voltage and such so you can get it pretty far through overclocking tolerance while still stable where AMD tends to push the stock settings pretty close to it’s limits already for that last few percentage gains.
Suppose I’ll see for myself whenever it’s time to clear the game but yeah I expect it to be a few months of patching and ideally something like half a year or more to really sort out the current issues. It’s not a fast process at all just from all testing involved and replicating issues and I don’t have the highest expectations for the developers being given enough time before support is ended and it’s time for whatever is next.
(Bloodborne possibly as those rumors go back and forth but nothing confirmed yet, God of War perhaps or something else entirely maybe even the sequel to Horizon here in two - three years.)
EDIT: Assuming the cache worked out OK and the prologue is done with then what I’m reading is that the game should be pretty stable although hitting stuttering or framerate dips in various areas although crash conditions could be down to any number of things so it’s not like it’s guaranteed the game will be stable for 2 - 3 hours in a row or more just from clearing the more known unstable opening area.
Doesn’t have to be a user error or system issue either and could be a less common condition in the game and it crashes or it’s a display driver issue even with the latest from NVIDIA or AMD and again a ton of variables for what could go wrong.
Not surprising to see them focusing so much on that in particular with trying to get more data, I suppose on that note SpecialK will kinda interfere with that slightly by replacing the games crash handler with the SpecialK crash handler although most users probably run with the game unmodified so the developers will get plenty of details on that too.
I had to disable hardware accelerated GPU scheduling as well (before Horizon was released) as it caused YouTube videos to stutter when displayed on the second monitor, which drove me insane.
Hmm, I’m going to do some testing. After the patch my game also seems to crash every 10 minutes or so, but I still haven’t tracked down what’s causing it.
Edit:
Yeah, this might be the case for me as well – the event log in Windows indicates that an Nvidia driver also crashed.
Im sorry, it was my bad the game was crashing. I had fullscreen=false instead of “true” on the config file. Now i been playing like 3hrs non stop. Its trial and error with this game, but i think i finally got it on point, thanks Kaldaien
That fixed the handles leak. But I am getting minor stutters every few moments. So not sure. lol. Looks like HDR is working better now in the game. Not sure if that recent update to game actually did something. I still can’t have both my monitors on when using HDR b/c it confuses the Displays and puts game on wrong monitor then makes the HDR look like HDR content on SDR monitor. Extremely grey and ugly. So I am forced to show only on 1 when I play game.
