NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... crashing after starting new game

My steam version of NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… keeps crashing when loading the game after entering name.

I have tried running the game as an administrator, adjusting settings in the NVIDIA Control Panel, adding the game to the exclusions in Windows Defender as well as other suggested fixes I have found online.

I am running SpecialK and have made various suggested changes which so far have not worked.

My current PC spec is:

OS: Windows 10
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1800X 4.0 GHz (OC)
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti (ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Twin Edge OC)
RAM: 16GB DDR4

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing the crashing and how I can go about fixing this?

Have you tried not using Special K ?

If Special K can be excluded as a potential cause of the issue then I’d assume it might have something to do with your username in Windows. Seems some users experiences crashes when the path to the Documents folder (C:\Users<username>\Documents) includes non-Latin characters or characters with diacritics.

In those cases moving the Documents folder (right click the Documents folder → Properties → Location → Move) to another place seems to solve it. Though note that this moves the whole folder, and so it might have repercussions elsewhere in some weird games that doesn’t locate the folder the proper way.

I had the same issue before I installed SpecialK in fact I installed it to see if it would resolve the issue.

My Windows 10 username does not have any special character in it, currently my username is my actual name which is a standard english name.

I would assume third-party software then.

Can you attach your modules.log and dxgi.log from Special K as well? That might help us track down any third-party software that messes with the game.

Huh, the logs are quite clean – the only third-party tool it indicates (beyond SK that is) is Nvidia Ansel, which can be disabled by following the Disable Ansel system-wide (DCH) section from here: Nvidia - PCGamingWiki PCGW - bugs, fixes, crashes, mods, guides and improvements for every PC game

But beyond that there’s no third-party tool being indicated in the logs, sadly.

I’ve have tried disabling Ansel which has not worked.

A previous crash which I have put the log for below did show an error in one of the GPU drivers:

Could it be an Graphics Card issue since I have had issues with my GPU since I installed it?

My current Graphics Card is a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti (ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Twin Edge OC) which is overclocked.

Well, you can see if using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to uninstall the drivers and then reinstall the latest Nvidia drivers solves it, I guess.

Hey I’m googling for similar issues from mine and I found this post, and I think I can help to point out a problem and its solution from my experience, which may solve your issue as well

not quite, have you noticed gameoverlayrenderer64.dll ? The Steam overlay hook, the same one that caused me problems when I was hooking DirectX;

it hooks IDXGISwapChain::Present through a detour hook, the problem with that is, after it finishes its callbacks, it calls IDXGISwapChain::Present again through the VTable, and it only executes the real IDXGISwapChain::Present function when the previous stack frame is Steam.

So, if any other hooks exist, they would be in the middle of the stack frames, so the previous stack frame won’t ever be Steam, resulting in an infinite loop, causing a stack overflow that crashes the program.

My solution to this issue:

  1. in my hook callback, I surround my calls to the original Present function with stackcount++ and stackcount--, if stackcount ends up >= 2 then it’s an infinite loop

  2. when an infinite loop is detected, I temporarily un-patch Steam’s detour hook before calling the original function (and later re-patch Steam’s detour hook after the call, so that Steam overlay is still valid)

  3. un-patching is implemented by reading the original DLL C:/Windows/System32/DXGI.dll as a binary file to find the true original byte codes to patch into the function.

after opening C:/Windows/System32/DXGI.dll as a binary file, I compared to find some amount of bytes (I chose 32 bytes) matching with the function in memory but excluding the first 5 bytes (that is how long a Steam’s detour jump instruction is), if the rest of the bytes matched, I believe I found the original bytes.

Note: my original byte code finding is done once at runtime, I decided not to “cache” it permanently in case DXGI.dll changes in the future, or the past (someone can be using an old outdated OS)

Huh, this is a necro. The statement of min from 2021 refers to what’s expected to see in Special K’s logs, and what’s not. Seeing Steam’s overlay DLL file is expected, while seeing additional unexpected third-party DLL files are not.

As for the method you describe, I believe Special K is already does something similar to that and have been doing that for a while now (since like 2017 or 2018).

As for the issue described in this thread, Special K had already been mentioned as being unrelated to it. Special K was used in an hope that it would solve it or maybe point towards what was causing the issue, which the Steam overlay is extremely unlikely to be.
